Martina Mc Ateer
Martina McAteer-Whelan is originally from Birr, County Offaly and now resides in Wexford. She is largely self-taught.
Martina works mainly done in oil but also employs classical techniques of glazing and gold leaf in innovate ways. Described by the Edinburgh artist and educator Robbie Burn as a lyrical painter, McAteer-Whelan sees her artistic process as cathartic with an earnest passion to express existence; in her own words: “I paint what I live!”
Her work frequently juxtaposes revelations of delicate beauty carved through rough textures and sacred subjects delicately balanced on an edge of nervous lines. They convey a sense of mysterious truth that is all at once familiar and unknown, a spiritual insight that is both gently peaceful and perplexing.
She is part of many collections and has held several exhibitions in the Wexford Opera Festival and the Kilkenny Arts Festival
